The Research Development & Process

The Research Development/Statements/Boundaries:

The proposed research will address the Japanese Anime culture wave and its effect in UK and US in general. The research will label the period of time that the Anime culture started in the UK & US form 1930's. The research development will keep the spotlight on:
  1. why this animation started in Japan?
  2. when, why did it got to the western media attention and
  3. how did this culture start to take another form in people lifestyle around the world.
Furthermore, it will focus on the youth lifestyle in the beginning of the late of 20th century and nowadays.
The research is significant because it will delimit the connection between the youth lifestyle and Anime culture wave as well as using this culture style to get their attention to the campaign's actions. Besides, the fact that it will encourage young people to detect their creativity and carry forward through the campaign, the research will help me to develop my work experience academically and practically.

The Research Feasibility:

The timescale assigned the period of time required to carry on my research process. The research timescale started from the beginning of December 2010. From the 2 weeks, I set up 4 days to collect data from different resources. I saved some collected resources as drafts in my blog that haven't been reviewed and analyzed yet. Once I get to them, I'll gather the missing parts before publishing.

Since the resources are relating to data collection, the type of resources required depends on the nature of the research proposal.  I'm planning to use a qualitative approach and plan to transcribe the data myself then there will likely to be little need of additional resources. I might need to use a quantitative study that involves analyzing survey and questionnaire then resources will likely to be needed too.

Statement of the resources required to complete the project:
1) 2D/3D Software training
2) Traveling to some places in London (Questionnaire & Survey)
3) Expert assistance in workplace
4) Library Materials (books, CDs, DVDs, videos, audio, articles, reports)
5) Internet resources and published materials.
6) Access to information related to the client business proposal

The proposed project must either be approved or rejected for more modification by the supervisor.  Once it's approved, I will receive an e-mail notification from the supervisor directing me to log on to the company shared server database. That will give me the permission to access the database and, if so, the current published version of the client business proposal will be accessed during work time.By then, I can review the client current updated configuration and the new added details of the business proposal.

Practically, the supervisor will guide me if my research proposal isn't as aimed to develop the ideas and skills related to work. Also, there will be weekly meetings to discuss the research project and training improvements. The other support available in workplace is from my colleagues. They will provide me the campaign logo and information related to the video specification for the website e.g.the display size.

The area of my expertise is mostly graphics design and multimedia. Sometimes I do photography and web design depending on the task given. Whenever it's needed at workplace, they provide a useful accredited training programmes.

Issues to consider when choosing how to undertake my research:

1/ What do you want to find out?
  • Does really "Anime" culture affect youth lifestyle nowadays?
  • What ways does it affect & why?
  • Examples of affection in UK & US
  • Anime culture wave (around the world)
  • Japanese animation background
  • Anime style in market
  • Animation history
  • Animation process & production
  • Animation techniques & tools
2/ How can you fully capitalize on existing skills and knowledge?
  • Academic skills to collect data and analyze it for workplace production improvement.
  • Graphic skills in manipulation and design
  • Marketing and advertising skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Effective meeting and recording supervisonal tutorials.
3/ In what ways might the research add to your skills and knowledge?
  • Time management
  • New production techniques
  • Develop my knowledge in animation
  • Critical thinking & writing
  • Observation
  • Planning
  • Referencing
  • Administering questionnaires
  • Learning diary
4/ What opportunities are available to collect data as part of your work?
  • Client business proposal (Client background and Campaign information)
  • Campaign slogan
  • Campaign web video specification (e.g. display size, quality and frame rate)

5/Do the research questions you have identified suggest a particular family approach?
Yes, the research approach suggested to be used is Qualitative.

6/ What data do you need to collect, in what format and from whom?
I'll need to collect data from:
  1. People (in professional-workplace-& public sectors-general places to hand & collect questionnaires)
  2. Library (books, articles, reports,CDs, DVDs ..etc)
  3. Internet

7/ How will your position as worker-researcher affect your research?
  • The research will be practical in the same time.
  • It will improve my understanding of the practice so it will be more effective
  • The practice influence will be reflexive in my research
8/ Are you in a position to influence and evaluate change?
Yes, doing this research will give me the courage to indicate the recent animation production process certified in workplace; and to determine the impact of change that will be made on production. Due to the fact that the process need to be replaced; by that it will improve the efficiency of production. In addition, the research will attempt changes and monitor the developed results.

9/ Is it appropriate to combine approaches or families?
Yes, the research will need to combine 2 approaches to conduct the research proposal. The first research family to collect data is qualitative and then using quantitative family to analyze the data.

10/ How can you ensure that you are not being unduly dependent on one source of data?

I'll use mixed approaches to conduct the research. Also, I'll use 2 different data collection tools which are reviewing and analyzing documents, literature and questionnaires.

The Research Process:

1/ The Research Purpose:

My investigation will be focused on whether using the "Anime" style in a video animation can capture the young's attention to the campaign.

2/ The Research Questions & Theory:
  • How animation started in Japan and when?
  • Why did it get to the western media attention?
  • How did this culture start to take another form in people's lifestyle around the world?
  • Are there any differences in lifestyle in the beginning of the late of 20th century and current lifestyles that were influenced already?
  • What ways does this influences appear?

3/ The Research Methodology/ Approach:

Mixed approach: that involves the mixing of quantitative and qualitative approaches.

4/ Data Collection Techniques:
  • Reviewing and analyzing documents and literature
  • Questionnaires
5/ Analysis Data:
All data collected will be recorded, analyzed and interpreted. Each instrument has its applicable way to analysis.

6/ Presentation to Stakeholders:
After analyzing the collected data and getting the results ready, I'll do a presentation to the team showing them the results and the recommendations.
